New Augmented Reality Game From Google Niantic Labs

Posted: 15 Nov 2012 10:24 AM PST

Google Niantic Labs has released an invite-only beta of 'Ingress' the new augmented reality game app that lets you play at international man/woman of mystery.

Here's your mission should you get an invite: A mysterious energy has been unearthed by a team of scientists in Europe. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe it is influencing the way we think. (Rupert Murdoch?) We must control it or it will control us.

So fire up your Android smartphone (not optimized for tablets) and the Ingress app to discover and tap sources of this mysterious energy. Pick a side, the "Resistance" or the "Enlightened." Acquire objects, deploy tech to capture territory, and all the other shenanigans.

The struggle is being played out globally. You can keep track of players around the world, plan your next steps, and communicate with others using an Intelligence map. And remember, the struggle to save the planet spans the entire world. Groups of people acting together can be more effective than acting alone.

No word yet on a general release.
