Watch Bollywood Movies On Google TV, Thanks To Viki Posted: 09 Nov 2012 03:16 AM PST Viki, the video and music streaming website, is turning people into translators with volunteers creating subtitles in many different languages, often within 24 hours of a video going live. The site, now also available as a free app for Google TV as well as mobile devices, mainly streams Asian content, from Bollywood to Japanese Anime and back to the thousands of hours of Film and TV coming from that most industrious of countries, South Korea. For Westerners with a pendant for Asian entertainment (with subtitles in your language) it is perfect as there is a choice of content that will never make the leap to Western TV channels. And for Asian's far from home, it's a remedy for those homesick blues. The most interesting part about Viki, is the community subtitling. It works thus; Community members subtitle their favourite shows into their preferred languages under a Creative Commons license using Viki's integrated platform, which allows for revision history and user-generated edits. To make a bit of money from this free site, Wiki also syndicates its shows with fan-generated subtitles to partners such as Hulu, Netflix and Yahoo! They also pull in revenue from ads shown at the start of each video which they share with the content provider. The subtitling is of a high standard and is in sync. The video quality is good and you can select up to 720p. Viki even dipped it's toe into TV distribution with Playful Kiss, a short-lived Korean drama shown on local TV in 2010. They obtained licensing to distribute the show in other regions, and then translated it into over 40 languages. It went on to garner almost 7 million viewers, with non-Asians making up 70% of the audience. The producer of the show recouped $400,000 in ad revenue via Viki and made $3.5 million in foreign broadcast deals since the show has been on the site. Viki was launched in launched in December 2010 and has offices in Singapore, San Francisco and Seoul. With over 1 billion videos viewed and nearly 200 million words translated, it's a lesson for the big global TV and film concerns with their scare tactics over illegal downloading/streaming of their content. They need to look and learn from models such as Wiki especially in regard to making TV and film available almost instantaneously throughout the world instead of their region-locked content streaming and films which don't reach the Outer Hebrides till a year later. People want the latest entertainment, and they want it now! You can download Viki for Google TV here. Source:Section: News Type: |
